A Dog Astray is one of the Side Quests in NieR Replicant. Side quests are optional tasks or quests usually requested by NPCs that players can choose to complete in order to obtain rewards. Some quests rewards are required for certain endings. 

 

An old man near the shopping district's souther entrance needs help finding his dog. The animal likes to roam the northern plains.

You found the dog, but it wsa already dead. Take the leaf from its mouth and return it to its master.

The master had already died by the time you returned.

A Dog Astray Walkthrough

 

The frail-looking old man villager next to the blacksmith is looking for Max, his dog.  He tells you he likes to run around the northern plains, but he hasn't seen him in over 24 hours. Head to the Northern Plains and look for the dog, he will be under the metal bridge that leads to Junk Heap, close to the water and will have a twinkling indicator. 

  • NieR cannot interact with the dog until all the Shades are killed off. Kill off the shades, then interact with the dog.

NieR will realize that it is too late and the dog has already passed away, but he has something in its mouth.

  • NieR will obtain Max's herbs 

Return to the area the old man is located. Another man will be in his place and will turn out to be his grandson. He finds out the old man's heart gave out on him and he has also passed away. 

"Huh. Looks like he went with his best friend after all"

Give him Max's herbs, and the grandson will say that this was the herb his grandad used for his heart medication and will be the one to reward NieR.
