Search for the Shade is one of the Side Quests in NieR Replicant. Side quests are optional tasks or quests usually requested by NPCs that players can choose to complete in order to obtain rewards. Some quests rewards are required for certain endings.
The guard by the shopping district's souther entrance claims there's a Shade in the village.
According to the girl, the Shade was near the river.
You failed to find the Shade. Ask the girl where she saw it one more time.
The Shade was reportedly in front of the library.
There was no Shade to be found. The girl is giving you conlicting statements. Ask some other villagers for clues.
Apparently the girl has been telling you lies. Go back and confront her about it.
The girl says that the Shade is definitely not near the norther gate or the hill to the west. Hmm...
You successfully defeated the Shade. Report back to the guard.

Search for the Shade Walkthrough
- Speak to the Guard near the southern entrance of the Village
He wants to discuss a sensitive issue. People are saying that a shade has managed to enter the village. Track it down, and kill it.
A child will run out and say she saw a really scary monster by the river.
- Look for the Shade by the river (walk towards the river from where the pigs are grazing), the Shade will not be there.
- Wait for NieR to examine the river, then ask the child again.
She will say instead that it was at the square in front of the library
- Inspect the courtyard in front of the library. No Shade there either.
- Ask the other Villagers for more information.
A villager will say he saw it was accompanied by a child.
A villager will say she saw it a few days ago, but it wasn't much bigger than a kid
A villager will say she saw something near the shopping district that kinda sorta looked like a Shade if you squinted
- Question the child again. She will say she saw it near the northern gate or the hill to the west.
- Look for the Shade near the northern gate on the hill to the west, (up the staircase from the market). There will be a small Shade.
They found out the little girl had been trying to protect the Shade after all
- Kill the Shade and return to the first Guard and this will end the quest.
